Nashville, TN, April 4, 2023 - The Phoenix Club of Nashville invested $15,980, and secured an additional $5,000 commitment from Anchor Investments, to establish the Child Refugee and Migrant Academic English Education Program for the Aloe Family, a Nashville-based nonprofit focused on supporting refugee children and parents through food ministry, educational opportunities and leadership development.
The goal of this program is to provide students who are lacking support the academic mentorship and help they need to succeed. The second goal is to empower students and parents alike to learn English to be able to succeed in school and in the workforce.
“The statistics say that 48% of refugee children relocated to the USA in 2021 remained out of school. The Aloe Family is on a mission to change this and help children reach their full potential, regardless of the challenges that they face. By partnering with the Phoenix Club, we have gained so much hope and feel supported in this mission moving forward. We are excited and motivated for all this year holds for our students,” said Natalie Firkser of the Aloe Family.
The mission of The Aloe Family is to provide opportunities for education, well-being, self-sufficiency and healing to resilient communities and individuals facing challenges of poverty and lack of family support. This mission is carried out through weekly programs of homework help and tutoring, job skills classes and mentorships, small business loans, English classes, community day programs, and free fresh groceries.
With the increased staffing and support this grant funding will provide, the Aloe Family hopes to continue its successful track record of increasing student achievement in the classroom. Additionally, the increased staff support will allow the Aloe Family to double its food distribution program.
"After seeing firsthand the work that The Aloe Family is doing in Nashville to support families and children, provide for their most fundamental needs and foster opportunities for each individual to flourish, I felt deeply compelled to support their efforts,” said Larry Kloess, Phoenix Club member. “I’m thrilled that Phoenix Club is able to financially support them in this way, and I eagerly look forward to witnessing these students achieve their educational goals in the future. I'm also deeply appreciative of Micah Lacher and Anchor Investments for co-sponsoring this grant and for all the work they do to spread generosity throughout the Nashville community."
